With the world going digital, the world motorsport body FIA, together with the Federation of Motorsport Clubs of Uganda (FMU), has launched the Esport Championship Cup series in a bid to extend and grow motorsport. FMU Sporting Commission Chairman Leon Ssenyange, who doubles as FMU Esport coordinator, outlined that the Federation aims to unlock the champion in you with the introduction of exciting and innovative virtual reality racing.
Uganda last produced an E-racing champion in Mohammed Ali two years ago through the FIA Rally Star promotion program, where the continent’s best at the last round held in South Africa was given a chance to participate at the WRC level.

Ssenyange further explained that with the FIA outlining governing regulations for the sport under FIA Appendix E, they are ready to hold a championship. The initial round starts on August 30th-31st, 2025.
“We are keen on competitors and champions in WRC and F1 competitions. Away from the physical racing, we are here to unlock the champion in you,” said Ssenyange while briefing the media.
The FIA is trying to create opportunities in esport, with an African Championship Cup being planned to be held in Mozambique this year. FMU has partnered with The Fun Station at Metroplex Nalya for the running of this year’s championship series.
“As a Federation, we are quite excited to be launching the Esport championship, and this is historical,” said FMU General Secretary Reynold Kibira. This is an opportunity to grow our sport and have different sport disciplines for expansion and growth.
