Kikankane Vows to Fight On Despite Mechanical Gremlins at Safari Rally Kenya
BY FRANK KAHEESI – KEDONG, KENYA-
Uganda’s rally ace Duncan Mubiru has vowed to push on to the finish of the brutal Safari Rally Kenya despite a series of mechanical setbacks that have tested both machine and driver during the 2026 edition of the world-famous event. The Ugandan driver remains determined to see the rally through to Sunday’s final stage, even after a challenging run through the unforgiving Kenyan terrain that has punished many crews.

Mubiru rejoined the rally under Super Rally regulations on Friday after earlier mechanical trouble but managed to survive day two and keep his hopes of reaching the finish alive.
Speaking after completing the day’s final stage, Kikankane admitted the rally had thrown everything at him from the very start.
“I opened my day with the front windscreen failing to clear on the opening Loladia stage, after the cancellation of Camp Moran, which turned out to be impassable following Thursday night’s heavy downpour,” Mubiru explained.
The heavy rains that battered the Naivasha stages turned sections of the rally into muddy traps, forcing organisers to cancel parts of the route and leaving drivers battling slippery surfaces, deep ruts and unpredictable conditions.
Despite the challenges, Mubiru remains resolute in his mission to complete the iconic African classic.
“I will fight on until the final stage by hook or crook,” he added, determined not to let the mechanical gremlins bring his Safari adventure to an early end.

Fellow Ugandan and Safari Rally debutant Oscar Ntambi is also maintaining a positive outlook after navigating the rally’s notoriously gruelling conditions. Competing in his first Safari appearance, Ntambi has focused on survival and learning as he steadily builds experience on one of the toughest rallies on the planet.
With the rally heading into its decisive final day on Sunday, the Ugandan crews continue to battle the elements and the terrain, hoping to tame the legendary Safari and bring their cars safely to the finish ramp.
