The inaugural Africa Karting Championship has officially kicked off in Benguela, Angola, bringing together competitors from 14 African countries, including Uganda, in a historic milestone for the development of motorsport on the continent.

Team Uganda’s drivers have successfully completed their initial testing and are now preparing to compete against some of Africa’s top karting talent in the Junior and Senior categories. The team is hoping to send a befitting Independence gift to Uganda motorsport fraternity.

Uganda initially registered four drivers: Christian Kisitu, 11yrs; Danvansh Kunder, 10yrs; Victor Keije, 14yrs; and Kevin Bebeto, 20yrs. However, only Kisitu and Keije will take to the track for the competition.

Beyond the racing, this championship represents a significant opportunity to strengthen grassroots motorsport in Africa. It provides FIA-affiliated national sporting authorities with a platform to develop structured pathways for nurturing young talent from an early age.

Many of the world’s leading Formula One and rally champions began their journeys in karting, building the skills, discipline and competitive experience that propelled them to the highest levels of motorsport. For too long, African talent has had limited access to such structured development opportunities.

The FIA has supported a privateer in WORR Motorsports to drive this vision and African Federations have had a side engagement to discuss the future of this championship (and Africa Karting series)

For Uganda, participation in this inaugural championship is about more than the immediate results. The invaluable experience gained by both drivers and officials in Angola will help strengthen local capacity, inform future development programmes and contribute to building a sustainable pathway for the next generation of Ugandan motorsport talent.

The ambition is clear: to give young African drivers the opportunity to start early, compete internationally and one day rise to the highest levels of world motorsport.
