The Championship Heat Rises as NRC Heads to Masaka
By Mwambazi Lawrence-The opening two rounds of the 2026 KCB National Rally Championship may already be in the history books, but the memories they created continue to dominate conversations across Uganda’s rally circles. From breathtaking speed and mechanical heartbreaks to fierce battles on the stages, the season has already produced enough action to remind fans why rallying remains one of the country’s most thrilling sports.
Now, as the championship dust settles from the opening exchanges, attention shifts to one of the most anticipated events on the KCB national calendar the SMC Challenge Rally in Greater Masaka.
Scheduled for 19th to 20th June 2026, round three of the KCB NRC promises another explosive weekend of speed, entertainment, and unforgettable rally atmosphere. Over the years, the Masaka-based event has earned a special place in the hearts of competitors and fans alike, thanks to its smooth flowing roads, budget-friendly logistics for crews, and the unmatched nightlife and fan experience that surrounds the event.

For many drivers, the SMC Challenge Rally is more than just another championship round. It is a rally where competition meets celebration. From the packed service parks to the lively streets of Masaka City, the event always transforms the region into a motorsport carnival filled with roaring engines, music, excitement, and nonstop fan interactions.
This year’s edition will cover a total distance of 303.88 kilometres, with 126.71 kilometres being competitive sections while 177.17 kilometres will be liaison stages connecting crews between sections.
Action kicks off on Friday 19th June with crews tackling stages around Masaka heading towards the popular Nabugabo Sand Beach. One of the beach stages will be repeated before the day climaxes with the fan-favorite Super Special Stage later in the afternoon.
Few locations on Uganda’s rally calendar generate the kind of excitement seen at Nabugabo Beach. Thousands of fans are expected to line the superspecial stage as drivers push their machines to the limit in front of massive crowds. The combination of beachside vibes, high-speed action, music, food, and entertainment is expected to once again produce one of the biggest rally spectacles.
The battle will then shifts to Sembabule on Saturday 20th June, where endurance, consistency, and mechanical reliability will become the ultimate deciding factors. Traditionally, Sembabule’s smooth and technical roads have separated contenders from pretenders, and this year is expected to be no different.

As the championship enters round three, all eyes remain firmly fixed on current championship leaders Hassin Alwi Jr and co-driver Musa Nsubuga. The pair have been nearly unstoppable so far, collecting an impressive 118 points from the opening two rounds through a mixture of raw speed, consistency, and tactical brilliance. Their dominance has already made them the early favorites for this year’s title chase.
However, the pressure continues to build from behind.
Umar Dauda and Steven Bunya remain firmly in contention with 82.5 points and know that a strong result in Masaka could quickly close the championship gap. Their performances this season have shown growing confidence and determination as they hunt for their first major breakthrough.
Veteran driver Duncan Mubiru, despite enduring a frustrating start to the season in Mbale, currently sits third overall on 79 points. Known for his aggressive driving style and ability to bounce back under pressure, Mubiru remains one of the most dangerous names heading into Masaka.
Tanzania’s Randeep Singh has also emerged as one of the season’s biggest revelations. Fresh from a superb NRC-category victory during the Shell V-Power Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally in Mbarara, Singh now occupies fourth place overall with 77 points
Former national champion Yasin Nasser completes the current top five standings on 73 points. While the experienced driver is yet to fully dominate the season, few within the rally fraternity would dare rule him out of the title conversation. His experience, pace, and ability to perform under pressure could still make him a major force as the championship intensifies.

With only two rounds completed and six more still remaining on the championship calendar, the battle for the 2026 KCB National Rally Championship remains wide open. Every point now carries enormous value, every stage becomes critical, and even the smallest mistake could dramatically alter the title race.
As crews prepare for another weekend in Masaka, one thing is already certain the SMC Challenge Rally is once again ready to deliver speed, entertainment, heartbreak, and unforgettable moments for Uganda’s passionate rally fans.
And once the engines finally fall silent in Masaka, the championship caravan will immediately turn its attention eastwards to Soroti for round four, where yet another chapter will await Uganda’s motorsport faithful.
