Mbarara Rally Launched

On Tuesday, 11th January  2016, the Lato Milk Mbarara Rally 2016 was launched at an event held at the offices at Acacia Avenue yesterday.

The rally take place on 29-31 January in the districts Masaka, Lwengo, Kiruhura, Bushenyi and Mbarara.  Scrutineering is on Friday 29 at Masaka.  Super Special Stage at Masaka Pine Ridge Bwala double circuit on Saturday 30 Jan Rally Route in Mbarara, Bushenyi, Kiruhura

Event is title sponsored by Lato Milk and cosponsored by ICEA Insurance, Mountain Dew, Integrated Security Services, Lake View Hotel, Fire and Safety Appliances.
At the same function, Shyam Kotecha, Director of Pearl Dairy, the official sponsors unveiled their package of Shs10m in cash and also Sh8m of products to help run the event amicably.
Mountain Dew also announced a package of Sh50m to cover the entire FMU Rally Calendar while Dr. Chiraag Kotecha of Victoria University Health Centre pledged to provide medical facilities and Ambulance during the two-day season opener.
The event starts with a Super Special Stage (SSS) of two runs (5km) at Pine Ridge Masaka on January 30. The following day drivers will negotiate 216.50km spread over six competitive sections.

FMU amends 2016 rally rule

The Federation of Motorsport Uganda (FMU) has passed the 2016 season regulations with amendments in the Clubman Rally Championship rule commonly known as the Two-wheel drive (2WD) rule.

The CRC rule was passed last year requiring all new entrants to start with 2WD cars before they upgraded.

However, the new rule consents drivers to start in any kind of car with a condition to start with Autocross; a new discipline that was introduced to improve new drivers skills.

“True we permitted new drivers to start in any car although they must participate in autocross events first,” says the FMU Vice President Technical, Mukiibi Katende.

“As they participate they will be accessed by experienced drivers, whoever will be found to have acquired skills to handle the rally car will be promoted to the proper CRC class,” he added.

Former rally champions drivers Charlie Lubega and Moses Lumala are among those that will employ their expertise to assess the new drivers and determine those ready for the top flight championship.

Among the passed regulations is the sequential gear box rule that accord cars with such gear boxes to score points in the NRC Championship.

Initially, cars with sequential gear boxes were scoring under group S cars.

The last regulation requires all rally drivers to use the Head and Neck Support (HANS) device for any race.

This was passed to strengthen the safety of the driver while racing.

2015 was a trying season says Arthur Blick Jr

Arthur Blick Jr says the year 2015 was a challenging season in all aspect of his life.

Blick competed for three titles in 2015 winning the National rally title and Enduro championship. He narrowly missed the motocross title, finishing second behind eventual winner Maxim Van Pee.

He shared with Kawowo Sports the challenges he faced last year.

“Last season was really hectic, competing in three championships in the same year is really challenging. It exhausts you physically, financially and mentally,” he said.

“First of all when am doing MX, am cautious because any mistake could impact on my competition in rallying,” he added.

Blick now hopes on reducing the burden on himself in the new year.

“This season I might be forced to drop one discipline to put much time on the NRC title defence,” he asserted.

He will again drive a Subaru impreza N10 for the new rally season.

“Yes I will be in a new car, but I cant call it an upgrade because its the same as the old one, the only difference is the gear box in the new one has a dog box while the other had a standard gear box,” he said.

While many local drivers have opted for Mitsubishis this year, Blick maintains the Subaru has its touch of magic on and off the races.

“Subaru maintenance is cheaper. If I damage something I just go to kiseka market and get spare unlike the Evos were u sometimes need to import spares,” says Blick.

Rwanda experience will be key – Kakaire

The Mountain Gorilla rally in Rwanda has over the years continued to attract new entrants from across the borders, with many Ugandans being part of it each year.

This year is no exception.

Uganda’s Peter Kakaire will be among the those on their first outing in Kigali for the July 31st-August 1st event.

Kakaire is looking forward to making the most of the Rwanda Rally experience.

“I am going out to get proper experience on a foreign land, getting used to the competition and pressure involved in such big events,” he tells kawowo sports.

The Eastern Motor Club driver adds that driving in Rwanda will provide even better preparation for the Pearl of Africa rally later in August.

“Rwanda will prepare me for pearl. If we use it to compete and judge ourselves, it will give us better impetus to attack in pearl.”

Kakaire will have Edward Kiyingi calling the pace notes in their Subaru Impreza N10.

And beyond just competing in Rwanda, he is optimistic of a good placing at the end of the rally.

“Am just looking out for the good finish in our first outing, it will be a good achievement.”

A host of other Ugandan drivers have confirmed participation in Rwanda’s biggest event.

Andrew Desh Kananura, Wilber Pole Pole, Jon Consta, Musa Kabega, Ortega Ismail, Fred Busulwa, Edson Mungyereza, Christakis Fitidis will all fly the Ugandan flag.

The Mountain Gorilla rally will for the first time run on two days with a super special stage at Nyamata on Friday 31st.
