By Frank Kaheesi-
A record 65 crews have entered the 2026 Shell V-Power Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally, making it the biggest entry in the history of the event. The rally will take place from May 7th to 10th in Mbarara, as confirmed by the Federation of Motorsport Clubs of Uganda. This large number of entries shows how much the rally has grown over the years and how important it has become, not only in Uganda but across Africa.
Out of the 65 crews, 23 will compete for points in the FIA African Rally Championship under the ARC and ARC2 categories. This means the competition will be very strong, with drivers fighting not just for local glory but also for continental points. Leading the Ugandan charge is defending African champion Yasin Nasser, who will be navigated by Ali Katumba. Driving their Ford Fiesta R5, the Moil Rally Team crew will be aiming to use their experience and home advantage to start their title defense on a strong note.

The rally has also attracted a strong number of foreign crews, showing its growing reputation in the region. Among them is Ahmed Huwel from the Mkwawa Rally Team, who has already started his journey to Uganda. More drivers from across East Africa are expected to join, making the event more competitive and exciting. The mix of local and international drivers will give fans a chance to watch high-level rally action.
The choice of Mbarara as the host city adds even more excitement to the event. Known for its fast and smooth roads, as well as beautiful scenery, Mbarara offers perfect conditions for rallying. Fans are expected to turn up in large numbers to support their favorite drivers and enjoy the action. The area has in the past proven to be a great rally venue, with challenging stages that test both speed and skill.
Speaking about the record entries, FMU Head of Media Frank Sserugo Kaheesi said the numbers show the trust that teams have in Uganda’s rally organization. He noted that the high turnout of both local and foreign crews is a sign that the event is now one of the top rallies in Africa. He also assured fans that everything is in place to deliver a safe and successful event.
The rally will serve as Round 2 of the African Rally Championship and also Round 2 of the National Rally Championship. This means drivers will be pushing hard from the start as they look to collect valuable points in both championships. With many top drivers on the entry list, fans should expect close battles, high speeds, and plenty of action throughout the weekend.
